News Literacy, Diversity,  and Ethics

As a staff, we work very hard to cover a diverse group of individuals. I have learned this concept to be very important as I have grown as a journalist. In some examples below, broadcast and print work, I made sure to cover a variety of sources with different perspectives on the topic. As an entire staff, we also strive to use different media platforms in order to share our work, like when we promote our newspaper or broadcast news network on our Instagram page.

Welcome to Columbus North High School! For my final project in my senior year, I created a 20-minute promotional video to show incoming and new students what to expect as a Columbus North Bull Dog. I wanted to promote the school in order to attract many different individuals. To do this, I highlighted a variety of different subjects offered at the school and kept the importance of diversity in mind when I was working on the video. There are many areas of the school covered from Athletics to Academics, highlighting our phenomenal C4 program, and much more. I interviewed a group of students and teachers that had different backgrounds and represented different grade levels. I learned through this project how diversity and different perspectives in the media content you create adds so much more to the quality of your final product.

The Next Four Years

â€‹Very few individuals receive the opportunity to attend the inaugural parade, let alone participate in it. In this story, Nya Croft shares her views of the Inaugural Parade atmosphere from her participation in the parade in 2016. On January 6th, 2021, rioters stormed the Capitol building in response to stop the final counting of votes. In this situation, the security measures for the country were tested and presented a concern for the inaugural ceremony for weeks to come. Columbus North government teacher, Daniel Marsh discusses his views on the concerns with the lack of security during the riots. As well as, how this could effect the outlook of future inaugurations.

Fan-raiser

â€‹For those struggling with the idea of not attending the Columbus North Athletic events in person, the CNHS Booster club has created a solution to add a few more attendees to the game. The fundraiser, Fans in the Stands, was created to raise money to support Columbus North Athletics. When individuals purchase a fan cutout they can pick a picture that will be posted in a section of the Memorial Gymnasium. In this story, multiple sources are interviewed to provide a perspective of what this fundraiser means to a student who reflects on the memory of a student section at games, a participant who decided to purchase a cutout, and a varsity basketball player.

“It’s flattering to think our friends, families, and fans would pay to fill the gym with their picture and make a donation to support athletic programs.  I think they know it’s been a tough year,” Gabrielle Duncan said. “Their cutout shows they care and want to see us succeed even if they can't be there in person.”
